Organic Waste

Not a pretty sight, but the worms
happily eat all the organic waste.

The WestWyck worm farm, which was designed primarily to handle the site's sewerage, has the additional advantage of being able to process all domestic organic material.

WestWyck has installed two 3,500 litre underground worm farms to handle site-generated organic waste including human wastes. WestWyck believes this is the first large scale application of worm farm technology to an inner urban site. Moreland City Council has granted planning approval of the system based on a generic system approval from the Environment Protection Authority.

The system will be connected to discharge to sewer. WestWyck's water balance analysis shows that for the warmer and drier months of the year WestWyck will be using all liquid in its evapotranspiration bed. The introduced mix of woolly ti-tree, river mint and carex grass is thriving on the moist and slightly saline conditions created by the sub-surface discharge of treated liquid.
